The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), who released the footage, admitted to a “significant human error” and attributed it to England’s “lapse of concentration and loss of focus”. This incident has ignited discussions about the effectiveness and accuracy of VAR in football matches.

Liverpool, the club directly affected by the incident, released a scathing statement calling for a wide-ranging review into how an error by the VAR prevented them from scoring in their 2-1 defeat at Tottenham.
